Well, Well, Well… Your Health and Your Home
What every homeowner should know and test, even if you’re not selling your home.
Out of sight, out of mind. When was the last time you tested your well water for bacteria or your home for radon gas? Most likely the last and only time you tested was when you purchased your home and did your home inspection.
Testing your drinking water and your home for radon gas has become a standard practice when buying a home and the results often surprise homeowners. They did not know they had either bacteria in the water and/or elevated levels of radon gas, both of which could be affecting their health and require action.
Radon is a radioactive gas that is prevalent in our area. You can’t see, taste or smell it. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. That is why it’s tested on the lowest level of your home, typically in the basement or first floor if on a slab.
Out of sight out and out of mind? You would only know by testing if radon had elevated levels or your well drinking water is positive for bacteria. BOTH are easily fixable with measures taken by professionals who specialize in these areas.
