If you answered yes, you’re not alone. The “Mom factor “is trending more than ever and the most recent survey from Realtor.com confirms that 75% of Americans surveyed expressed a desire to live closer to Mom. An increase in homebuyers influenced by the radius of staying closer as life progresses has contributed to location choices for buying or renting a home. 

According to the survey, approximately half of Americans have either moved or intend to move to be closer to their moms, or their moms relocated to be closer to them.

Increasing costs of living, home prices, and higher interest rates that have no end in sight have created a perfect storm, causing homebuyers to seek options that are both financially feasible and beneficial to their families. And, for some families, the solution to meeting these economic challenges and the lack of housing inventory has been to move in together. The Realtor.com survey shows 20% of adult children moving in with their moms and 13% of moms moving in with their children. A Pew Research Study indicated that a quarter of US adults aged 25-34 lived in multigenerational households in 2021. In 1971 that number was 9%. 

Whether living together in the same home, or close, to each other, there are benefits for all family members. Mom/maternal figures often provide emotional and practical support, including help with child care. And moms (and dads) approaching retirement and beyond receive benefits as they enjoy being close to their children and grandchildren. Coordinating and sharing responsibilities for child and eldercare costs can result in huge financial savings and help balance work and caregiving responsibilities, influencing decisions on where to live and ways to pool resources.

The “Mom factor” is a true influencer in deciding where to live and when to buy and/or sell.
